On Tuesday April 22 at 7:00 pm Hana Balaban-Pommier will give a presentation of her acclaimed exhibition work and discuss her recent mentorship experience in the US. The second part of her talk will draw upon her knowledge as an Occupational Therapist to guide potters in maintaining their physical health through proper studio behaviours.

Hana Balaban-Pommier is a ceramic artist and educator living in Toronto, ON. Inspired by people, events and environments around her, Hana strives to capture states, emotions, moods and perceptions in her explorations of ceramics.

When Hana emigrated to Canada from her native Czechoslovakia, she began to explore pottery making as a casual interest. She became fascinated with the more esoteric qualities of clay, and ceramics has become a life-long pursuit.

Hana’s educational background includes University of Massachusetts’s Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Ceramics, Art History studies at Harvard Extension School and Sheridan College’s Crafts and Design Ceramics program, as well as a B.Sc. in Occupational Therapy from the University of Toronto.

In her studio Hana likes to push boundaries and explore new creative processes. The recipient of a 2014 Craft Ontario Award, her award-winning work has been shown throughout Ontario and in the US. As an educator, Hana is interested in clay’s potential for building community and its therapeutic effects.
